To keep track of all the style overrides in InDesign for your book use the Toggle Style Override Highlighter option. This will not only allow you to see the general bolded and italicized text but also kerning, tracking, paragraph spacing, substituted glyphs, etc.

The Toggle Style Override Highlighter option can be added two main ways. The first is to click on the Toggle Style Override Highlighter icon, which is a plus sign in square brackets. The second is to click on the paragraph or character style panel to right and choose the Toggle Style Override Highlighter option.
