Human Spam

According to Urban Dictionary, human spam is "Individuals who approach one on the street with unsolicited literature or requests, such as free newspapers, The Big Issue, flyers, requests for money, 'Charity Muggers', religious apologists, petition carriers, etc. These individuals in Britain have replaced the now banned practices of cold calling, email spamming and junk mailing, as the only thing charities/companies don't need permission for any more is invasion of personal space and public harassment." This focuses on the in-person aspects of human spam but it can also be related to online.

Pluralistic Ignorance

Pluralistic ignorance is defined on the website Changing Minds as something that "occurs where the majority of individuals in a group assume that most of their others are different in some way, whilst the truth is that they are more similar than they realize. They thus will conform with supposed norms. When most people do this, the supposed norm becomes the norm."

I was told recently by a friend from home, an exceptionally talented blogger whose work can be found here, that what makes a good story has a lot to do with how badly the author wants to tell it. If it's something that is there to take up space it is noticeable and it's probably not going to be as entertaining as something that the author really wanted and was excited to express. It kind of goes along with that quote, I can't remember who wrote it or how I found it (you could probably find it here), that goes something like "there is no story so exciting that it can't be made boring. There is no story so boring that it can't be made exciting."

Chip Kidd says, "everything that is not made by nature is designed by someone." This statement is actually pretty obvious, but I'd never really thought about it before, and I find it pretty interesting to think about. Though architecture is generally very different from books, there can be some connections.

This image is from the botanical gardens. I don't really know what it means but it reminds me of some Little House on the Prairie type thing.

In Clive Thompson's book, Smarter Than You Think, he explores the idea of whether or not technology is more helpful or harmful. Although he acknowledges that there are negative consequences that come along with society's ever-growing use of technology, there are many benefits as well. smarter than you think

Amateur Traveling

I’m an amateur traveler. I can figure my way from point A to be B better than most, walk through several airport concourses with the familiarity and comfort of a second home, and know what brand of champagne is cheapest in several different countries. On the other hand, my sense of direction is sometimes seriously lacking, my complete lack of coordination results in many accidents, and I have seen maybe 1% of this Earth. I am an amateur because I still have an infinite number of things to learn. I am an amateur because traveling is my passion.
