Public Blog Posts

This week’s assigned reading was pretty neat. I like to write a lot to clear my head of the many thoughts and ideas that pass through it throughout the day. I have a blog that only a few people have access to in which I publish my most personal thoughts and ideas. Its difficult because its on the internet, and many people around the world can see things that are really personal to me. This makes the internet seem really scary.

Design on Campus, XOXO Gossip Girl

When creating this blog and looking through everybody else's work, I realized just how unimaginative I am and the amount of creativity I lack. I realized that when I think design, I think specifically of something printed off and plastered on a board somewhere, but fail to realize that everything is, in fact, designed. That aside, I found some really interesting posters on campus that go along greatly with Chip Kidd's Go (which is a crazy interesting book and makes me consider changing my major).

I'll admit I'm definitely a person who will spend a good bit of time in Daniel reading all of the various flyers and posters on the bulletin boards. And so, for me, this assignment really hits home--in a good way. As an intern in the Pearce Center for Professional Communication sometimes I'm the one actually creating them, and so it's important to kind of notice what works and well...what doesn't.

I'm definitely a design fan (I've been pinning cover art and spreadsheets on Pinterest for a good year now) and I like Chip Kidd's book so far. He seems to know what he's doing at least.

I love design. We are more and more a visual people, and so it follows that we are drawn to that which is aesthetically pleasing. No rocket science here.

I found the following images in the Freeman Hall basement, where the printmaking and photography studio are located.

This first image is a poster displaying the various events going on within the Clemson art department. I love the grid structure and how it contains little bits of beautiful chaos in each cell. The juxtaposition of order and disorder come together beautifully here.

Designing Clemson

My RA freshman year was a design major, and coupled with the fact that RA's are in fact REQUIRED to talk--casually--to each individual member of their herd, I frankly learned a lot about design. Granted, I dind't get nearly nearly as much as when I read Chip Kidd's wonderful little guide to design and sought out examples on our own campus. Here's a few of the things I saw:

This right here is something I'm sure we all see multiple times on our (long) walks to class, a CAT bus route marker that quickly and effectively communicates where that purple legal liability on wheels is going to take you.
