The skill of Learning

“Every new tool shapes the way we think, as well as what we think about.” (Thompson, 7). This quote from Thompson’s Smarter Than You Think was very profound to me. It shows that our minds are always seeping in new knowledge and are changing and shaping as time continues. It really makes me think of learning as a creative twist on an already exciting life. An example of this in my life is that when I read Shakespeare
I often start talking in rhythm on accident. My friends always call me on it, but it shows the effect the words have on my mind.

Back to the Future

In response to the two chapters “The Rise of the Centaurs” and “We, the Memorious”, I began to realize how truly important technology is today, and how it is becoming even more-so necessary as the future progresses. Clive Thompson hit the nail on the head when he said, “At their best, today’s digital tools help us see more, retain more, communicate more. At their worst, they leave us prey to the manipulation of the toolmakers,” (Clive, 6). I would normally shy away from anything new and foreboding; especially if people begin questioning if a machine is smarter than a human being.

Memory and Capturing Moments

As I was reading "Smarter Than You Think" a few of the things Clive Thompson really stuck with me. For example, he said "every new tool shapes the way we think, as well as what we think about". This quote really rang true to me because when I think about the things I appreciate in life, I often think "how can I take a picture of this for Instagram?" or "should I post this to my Facebook?". These new tools and technologies have changed the way I think about things while I'm in the situation because I want to document them for the world to see. I also start to think about social media during moments that I should be focusing on the present, which can be a bad trait of the new technology (and I'm definitely not one of the most social-media addicted people that I know).
