Simplicity in Writing

By on

This video by Microsoft shows how having to include too much in the design of something damages the effectiveness of the design. The beginning of the video shows how simple the ideas were at first for the design of the ipod package. As time went on, the design becomes more and more complicated as extra details and advertisements are added to the package. In the end, the package is so covered with details, that nothing stands out. The design principles in this video are similar to the design principles we focused on while building resumes.

Here is the before “”The Challenge”
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that causes nerve damage, crippling both the brain and spinal cord and rendering a person with ALS paralyzed before eventually dying. The chart below summarizes the specific symptoms of this disease. Right now, there is no cure in sight, and many organizations/charities have been created to collect donations to research a cure for the disease.

Using the paramedic method, I revised some of my sentences so that they varied between short and long. I also revised some of the verbs. Here are some examples:

After doing some research, we found out that the ice bucket challenge was originally for charities other than ALS. According to Time Magazine, the ice bucket challenge started targeting ALS when Chris Kennedy, a golfer, nominated his wife’s cousin and listed ALS as the charity that we wanted to donate for. Since her husband had ALS, she passed on the challenge to others in her town. This is how it went viral as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

There are many new tools I learned about in Indesign that could be useful in building a resume. One of these tools allow you to add editorial notes. This source shows how to add these notes: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/adding-editorial-notes-indesign.html. Adding editorial notes in Indesign is a very useful tool for designing resumes in Indesign. This allows for people to proofread the resume as an Indesign document and add comments directly.

Here is a link to my LinkedIn. I have kept most of it up to date over the past year, but made a few changes. I would love any feedback on any of the content. Most of the job descriptions are in short points instead of paragraph form. I am thinking about changing them to incorporate some of both. I would love any opinions about the format of the job descriptions.
