If I can do it, you can too!

Wow. APE is one of the most helpful books I’ve ever read. Chapter 13 is especially helpful with all of the book publishing things we’re doing in class now! The authors of this book probably called Chapter 13 the “hairiest in the book” because there is so much to process and get through! This chapter holds a ton of information about the converting process, and there are lots of things to comb through (pun intended). One of the things that is hard about preparing a book for distribution to a wider audience like they talk about in chapter 12 is that you’re going to have to format the file for all of those channels. This takes a lot of time, money, and knowledge about the publishing and converting process for files.

I would tell aspiring authors or self-publishers to learn about the process of publishing books for different channels before they start working. I would also advise them to keep their files straight and always name them appropriately. Organization is so important when you’re working with so many different types of files so always make the virtual path straight in your work. I would also say not to lose hope, because if I can do it, you can! Take a look at my screen shots below for some encouragement, and click on them for some helpful hints!

Hi Larissa - I thought the

Hi Larissa - I thought the way you linked to help sites through your images on this post was really creative and cool. I agree about how helpful APE is, especially chapters 12-13 from our reading this week. As I was reading through them I wondered how many people who are interested in self-publishing have read this - it seems like it should be required reading for self-publishers! I think you give good advice to aspiring authors; it's important to really understand the publishing process and the different options available before diving in. Great post, thanks for sharing!

Hey Larissa!

APE definitely should be a required read for any and all trying to get into self-publishing. Though it highlighted just how scary it can be, it was extremely helpful and detailed. I feel like Kawasaki and Welch didn't miss a thing. Staying organized would definitely have to be a priority, just from our one individual book assignment in class I feel like I've gathered tons of files! Great advice!
